In 1954 Millstone Township poultry farmers, tired of relying on surrounding communities, purchased a used ambulance and formed their own First Aid Squad.  They bought a 1941 Cadillac ambulance from Roosevelt for $450 and housed it in a chicken coop on a poultry farm in Perrineville.

Later in 1954 the Squad took out a loan for $1,500 and got an additional $200 donation from the township to build a garage to house the ambulance. In 1960 an addition was added on to the garage to serve as a meeting room for the squad, and a new ambulance and equipment were purchased for $16,000. At that time, most patients were transported to Fitkin Hospital in Neptune, while others went to Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, St. Francis in Trenton, and Princeton and Perth Amboy Hospitals.  All of the early members were farmers who provided coverage day and night.  The dispatcher was a community resident who would call each member one by one on the phone until there were enough to cover the emergency.

In 1982 a used 1974 Chevrolet ambulance was purchased from the Yardville First Aid Squad, resulting in the need for a larger facility to house Millstone First Aid's ambulances.  With the cooperation of the Township, a new building was erected on Perrineville Road by the members of the First Aid Squad.  Once a month the members met to clean the building and ambulances.

As the years went on, additional ambulances were purchased to meet the growing needs of the community: In 1985 a new Chevrolet ambulance was purchased, in 1989 an extrication vehicle was purchased, and in 1993 and 1995 class A ambulances were purchased. 2004 marked the latest ambulance purchase which had a price tag of $138,000, substantially more than the $18,000 fully equipped Cadillac back in 1960, along with an addition to the squad building to handle the additional vehicle.

Today, over 50 years after it all began with local farmers in our community, the Millstone First Aid Squad is proud to carry on the legacy, and continues to be staffed 100% by volunteers from our town responding to calls for help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The squad currently has 3 ambulances and nearly 30 members who give unselfishly of their time to serve our community in time of need providing basic life support and rescue services for the sick and injured.  In 2009 the First Aid Squad responded to over 700 calls.
